Retro bunting

retro cushion on formica chairWell, we’ve finished making the bunting and cushions for Retro Sunday. I’ve really enjoyed working on fabrics with big flowers and bright shades of orange, brown and green – it feels very cheerful and a great chance to venture into the fearlessness and funkiness that epitomises “retro”.

It also seemed really timely to have a retro event. We’ve been wanting to do something with Gavin at the Orange Cup on Weymouth Seafront for ages and also were planning a Make Time for Tea party for the Eve Appeal. So, after listening to the Radio 4 Woman’s Hour slot on Lucienne Day I grabbed this idea as a great excuse to explore Day’s impact on fabric design in the 1950’s and 60’s, eat some cake with our friends and chill out with some of the greatest tunes that we’ve ever heard.

In 1951 Lucienne created the Calyx design which was showcased at the 1951 Festival of Britain.

This was the start of an incredible career in fabric design – spearheading a “Contemporary design” approach that was perfectly in tune with the post war new look.

the Calyx design by Lucienne Day

Taking influence from plant forms and using rich earth and acid colours and irregular abstract forms, Calyx was initially viewed with scepticism by her principal client, Heal Fabrics. However it was so widely praised, across the world and at home it achieved the International Design award – and Heal quickly began championing Lucienne’s work. Over the next 20 years Lucienne launched over 70 patterns for the company.

Pallant House Gallery in Chichester is currently exhibiting the works and lives of Lucienne and Robin Day – and how their influence on furniture and textile design changed our world. The exhibition continues until the 26th June so if you’re heading anywhere the other side of Portsmouth in the next few months it would be worth calling in to get more retro inspiration. Its been great fun finding retro fabrics for Sunday’s tea party and I think there’s going to be more from us in this vein. We’ve recently invested in some cool formica chairs and together with the clean lines and crazy colours of our Poole Pottery from the 60’s through to 80’s, we’re gathering plenty of accessories for retro parties.

Its free to join us on Sunday listening to vinyl music on Marco’s record player, or just to check out our retro bunting, drink tea from 1970’s orange teacups and eat cakes in aid of the Eve Appeal. More information is here: Retro Sunday We’re hanging out all day on the 17th April at 123 the Esplanade – its set to be sunny and we have the best view of the sea possible.

Vintage Market – Cherry Closet pictures

Boscombe Vintage Market was a very snowy scene this morning when we called in – it is quite a small market but growing steadily and next year it will be happening monthly so traders and customers will both increase. I loved the vintage fashions there – especially great to buy some last minute stocking fillers – we chose some very 50’s headscarves which were fab.

Our friends from the Cherry Closet– Nicki and Laura were also there – with a selection of their vintage coats, hats and party clothes – they looked glamourous as ever in spite of the cold weather.

We also bumped into Sarah at the Grove Studio selling some gorgeous fashion goodies and furnishings. Sarah is also an excellent upholsterer – we know her from way back so great to see her again.

And a new contact for us were Chelsey’s Cupcakes based in Bournemouth. You never can know enough cupcake makers we think!

Look out for news of Vintage Dorset promoted Dorchester-based events in the new year – we’re all getting together to put together some fabulous days out and fill the void of vintage events between Bridport and Bournmouth so really exciting news to come. If you’re a Dorchester or Weymouth based vintage trader and want to be involved, get in touch by emailing me at info@vintagedorset.co.uk or post a message on our Vintage Dorset Facebook page.
