The Wessex Transport Society and Swanage Town Council have joined forces to hold the Purbeck Bus Rally – a vintage event exhibiting a wide range of present-day and heritage buses on the Main Beach Car Park, Victoria Avenue, Swanage.

The event is led by the Wessex Transport Society who formed in 1983 to provide events and activities for and through a group of transport enthusiasts initially from the Bournemouth area but increasingly spreading much further afield. The group now boasts more than 250 members and has a full events calendar including rally’s meetings and road runs.

This is a great family event ideal for a vintage picnic or if you fancy an afternoon outing with a visit to a teashop in Swanage this might be just the ticket. Look out for the Brook Tea Room, 15, the Parade – a lovely little tea room on the sea front – great sea views and huge slices of cake and also listed in the Afternoon Tea Guide.

Vintage Steam Gala and transport rally – glorious!

We had a fabulous afternoon on Sunday at the Swanage Railway Vintage Transport Rally visiting the vintage cars steam engines and vehicle displays at Harman’s cross. The Bournemouth and Poole Preservation Society were supporting the Swanage Steam Railway for this local rally and offering a fine end-of-season outing at the great cars, vintage lorries and engines restored and conserved by local members.  The train timetabling was a bit out of kilter – arising we hear from a small conflagration in Corfe – I guess burning things is one of the risks of travelling with coal ablaze at one end of your engine! Although it sounds a bit like an old black and white movie, the Fire Service were on the scene pretty quick and the village was saved! Nothing too exciting really after all – this is Dorset!

As for us punters, the weather was idyllic so no-one seemed to mind the delays too much and with picnic in tow we just munched on our Dorset Ham sandwiches …mmmm!

The old railway hands do tend to look a bit like they just fell out of a spaghetti western….

Finally the train arrived and we were blessed with glorious sunshine and steam
