If eggnog isn’t your thing and you don’t go a bundle on sherry its time to stir up some mulled wine to get your Christmas party heated!
Recipe for a very small toasting… (or multiply by at least three for a more sociable party)
Ingredients1 x bottle of full bodied red wine 4 tbsp sugar half a nutmeg (grated) 1 cinnamon stick 1 orange studded with cloves 1/2 pint pure orange juice 1/2 pint water 1 bay leaf (optional) 1 tbsp brandy Slices of orange
Put the ingredients together in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Stew for at least 5 minutes better after 10. Taste to see if you need more sugar. (Linda thinks the cook needs several tastings to be absolutely certain)
Don’t boil as this burns off the alcohol!
Ladle into glass punch cups or other vessels that will stand up to hot temperatures like our vintage tea-cups!
Top with orange slices and serve with mince pies!
If you really don’t want to bother thinking about buying in any of the separate spices, studding oranges with cloves and grating nutmeg etc, (lets face it any time-savers at Christmas are a blessing) then we think its perfectly acceptable to buy some of the Schwartz ready mixed spices and pop a bag in the pan with the wine, sugar and (we like) orange juice.
We serve ours in our 1940′s and german earthenware vintage teacups (which are just the ticket for a strong hot toddy) Therein lies the root of some brand new Christmas traditions!
